City Square Mall - Our Green Tour

[Media Invite]

We've been to City Square many times, mostly for various mall activities for the kiddos. You know, the various meet and greet of cartoon characters etc. I always knew that the mall was being touted as Singapore's only Eco mall, but I never really knew what that meant, till our last visit to the mall a couple of weeks back.

The merry-go-round is all inclusive and even wheelchair-bound kiddos or adults for that matter, can join in the fun!
These swings are also safe for kiddos and would allow persons with disabilities to sit in safely too.
The first thing that attracted the kiddo was the outdoor Eco playground. At first glance it didn't really look much different from any other playgrounds. However after reading the description on the signage, I now know that much care had been taken to ensure that the materials sourced are all from accredited suppliers who do not add to the problem or illegal logging etc.

The roof allows sunlight to pass through, providing ample lighting to the basement below while the solar panels providing energy for air-cooling, Rainwater is also harvested for non-potable uses.
Being in the land scarce Singapore, it is refreshing to have malls with such greeneries instead of the usual conversion of every inch of lettable space for retail / commercial usage.
And this Angsana tree is a beneficiary of the green thinking of the mall owners.
Ever wondered where the butterflies from our urban district comes from? This might be a clue.
Natural sunlight flows through the mall. One doesn't feel claustrophobic at all with all these space.

I have always loved science and it's great that one can read about nature if you only looked around the mall. Besides, the mall has dedicated bins for separating the recyclables from the usual waste. A good initiative that should really be rolled out islandwide.

Media Tasting

Traditional Sarawak Noodles ($8.90) - Springy homemade noodles with char siew, fried wanton and minced pork. Much like your usual wanton mee but with added minced pork.
Fried Wantan ($4,00) and Bacon Cheese Ball ($5.50)
Caramel 3 Layer Tea ($4.50) - Sweet stuff, my cup of tea really.
Genki Herbal Chicken Soup Pan Mee ($12.90) - Tender chicken with Mee Sua in not too over-powering ginseng soup base. A little oily though.
Multigrain Soybean ($3.50) - This is not your usual soybean milk, but it has some grain bits in it and taste a little malty. Nice healthy drink I would say.
Curry Chicken Pan Mee ($11.90) - Fat yellow noodles with chicken, bean sprouts and baby potatoes. With beencurd sheets and tofu puffs too.
Happy Louie snacking on fried wantan.
There is a new noodle house at City Square Mall named 面对面 or "Face to Face" in English. It is located at unit #02-23/24 and is its first overseas franchise. The noodle house's offerings would not go wrong, and will probably suit the tastebuds of most, however the pricing may seem to be a little on the high side. Luckily there are having various value combos with drinks and sides that make it really worthwhile!

PUB at City Square Mall

PUB was also at the mall for a one-day exhibition on the day of our visit that showcased a series of beautiful photos contributed by Instagrammers that go by the theme of the four seasons. It showed how they visualized Singapore to be like in the various seasons. And to reward its followers on Instagram and Facebook, followers were also given a sure-win spin to win attractive Water Wally plushies!

Thank you City Square Mall for the invite, we thoroughly enjoyed the mall visit and will be looking forward to more!

La Roche Posay – Now They Say

[Sponsored Review]

Following our initial review of the cream a couple of weeks back, we got some of our friends and readers to try out the Cicaplast Baume B5 from La Roche Posay for a myriad of skin problems they are facing as well. It was only then I realized that eczema is indeed a very common problem faced by many in this tropical country, and that many had already sought out medical treatments, often involving steroid cream just to attempt to control the problem.

Out of the 5 testers I sent the cream out too, 4 of them were suffering from eczema of varying severity while the last was someone down with an irritating rash that refused to go for a few days already. That really prompted me to do some reading on what causes eczema. And the more I read, the more irritated I would be, especially if I am a sufferer. Why? This is because no one can effectively pinpoint the cause of the eczema, and many sufferers may have the condition for life! But the worst is that whatever eczema one may be suffering from, medication can only treat the symptoms such as flared skin, blisters or itchiness. In short, there is no cure unfortunately.

Test Subject 1

He recently experienced hand eczema on his index finger just 6 months ago and didn’t have any inkling on why and how it happened. The finger itched occasionally but it wasn’t that bad. The skin flaked quite easily. The cream moisturized the problematic area although it required more than the recommended twice daily application to keep the dryness in check.

Test Subject 2

She had atopic dermatitis on her neck since the age of three as well as the occasional outbreak of rashes on other parts of her body and this condition has accompanied her through adulthood. The joint areas are especially prone to rashes due to the hot weather. She felt that the one-week treatment did not bring about any significant improvements to her old problematic areas, but the skin was better moisturized.  However she pointed out that applying the cream at new breakout areas provided a cool protective screen over the small rashes that erupted.

Test Subject 3

Subject is an avid runner and he has experienced mild eczema on the sole for quite some time, especially after running. His condition is not particularly serious but he mentioned that the itch is really bad at times. Following the application of the cream for a week, he had noted that the new skin had formed and he felt relief from the itch, especially after applying.

Test Subject 4

He has had serious eczema for over the last 10 years and is currently on antihistamines to alleviate the itch. He had also tried various remedies but yielded little success.  According to his feedback, he did experience slight relief from the itch after applying the cream and it had also aided in his skin recovery.

Test Subject 5

She had rashes at the back of her neck for a few days prior to the usage. The rash appeared out of nowhere and she had suspected it to be an allergic reaction to certain external factors. She was able to see improvement in her skin condition within 2 days of applying the cream as compared to previously when she did not do anything. Her condition had cleared up by day 4 of twice-daily application.

The Verdict

The experiment revealed that La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 is still no miracle cream for eczema, which is understandably so. Even doctors are baffled as to the exact cause for eczema, which can range from anything like allergens, irritants, temperature, genes, hormones, stress to and even food. And there is no cure for it.

Although the cream does not cure eczema, it did aid in the relief of itchiness and helped in the skin recovery for the testers. To be fair, the subject had only tried the product for a week and the results should be better over a longer period of usage.

As a whole, the cream had proven to be effective for mild rashes or skin irritations and is a much safer formula that is suitable even for babies, or anyone with sensitive skin for that matter.  It would be a good idea to have one in the house to help soothe any skin irritations that might pop up unexpectedly at times, be it insect bites, burns or rashes from allergies. A definitely safe way to #RepairMySkin for sure!

Really sad to have missed this year's LEGO Star Wars Days media launch recently, knowing that the kiddos would have been so happy to attend. But being such great a LEGO-loving family (read our latest Yahoo article here), we still ought to share with you on the Star Wars event that is taking place at LEGOLAND Malaysia for the entire month of May this year.

Any kids below the age of 12, dressed up as Star Wars character will enjoy FREE entry with every paying adult, valid for the entire month of May. But must be in full costume hor, not only a mask. And if you visit on Saturdays and Sundays of the month, you would get to build their very own limited edition mini LEGO Millennium Falcon at the LEGO Academy and bring it home. Following the success of the inaugural Aviva Superfundae last June, the one-day fun-filled carnival is back again this June! I have not been to the first carnival but after reading about how awesome it was and how well-organized the activities were last year, I cannot wait to bring my 4 kiddos this year!

This year, the carnival is going to be held at The Meadow, Gardens by the Bay, on  Sat, 4 June 2016 starting from 10.00am all the way to 9.00pm. There will be lots of fun activities for the whole family. You can expect the following highlights at Aviva Superfundae 2016 this year -

Circus Centre

You must come to this zone just for the Mega Candy Cannon! They are shooting free Haribo gummies out of it every hour! Come over in the evening and catch a movie under the stars too, and relax after a full day of fun.

Kids get to zip around in the Speedy Zone on skate scooters, squiggly cars and push bikes.  While daddies can take part in the Double Daddy Dash, Daddy Donut Dash or even the Daddy Mommy Piggyback!

If you feel hot, join the Beer Dash and get a refreshing beer after it, but kids will have to make do with a 60m Milk Dash though.

Dream Castle

Love LEGO and building block? Look no further. Create your own life-sized buildings and mazes with the the blue foam blocks from Kaboodle Play. Mosaic Workshop, JayJayJolly and Da Little Arts School will able be there with activities for the budding artists in the kiddos!

Pirate Island

It's not all dry fun, so prepare extra clothings for both your kiddos and yourself, and battle it out with Nerf Super Soakers at Craycrayspray Water Play. Or pop by the Pirate Island and make your own Treasure Boat using origami paper, float it down the winding river and see if it survives the rapids!

Jungle World

Little ones can take part in the Squirrels & Acorns while parents can form a parent-child team and navigate through the Numakiki Jungle Obstacle! A super fun circuit that puts your brains and motor skills to the test. Want some goodies? Hop onto a 14-ft trampoline, then Jump ‘n Grab them from above.
