WICKED The Musical

[Media Invite]

The last time that WICKED The Musical played in Singapore was way back in 2011, the year that my 3rd child, Stacci was born and she's already 5 this year. In short, it's been quite a while since the last run of this broadway musical here in Singapore. When I told her that we were going to catch the musical and asked her if she would like to wear her witch hat there, she was totally excited and even asked for green body paint so that she can emulate Elphaba!

Can't help it reenacting the poster. Funny right?
I am honest. I only heard of the name to this multi-award winning play that had actually gone on for an incredible 13 years since it was first conceptualized, BUT never had an inkling of the storyline. I did some reading online before attending the show, so that I can explain to the kiddos should need be. For those uninitiated like me, this play is actually a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, the well-known movie, show, animation or story known for its famous characters, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and The Lion. Wicked will reveal how they came about.

The flaw-less singing and performances by the main characters, Glinda, the Good Witch (played by Carly Anderson) and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (played by Jacqueline Hughes) was simply a joy to watch. While the narcissistic and sampat (singlish slang) character of Glinda, and her many bimbo-istic moments added much laughters, Elphaba on the other hand projected a very strong character, and was hot-headed. But despite putting on a strong front most of the time, she would still be able to elicit strong feelings of empathy from the audiences as she was being ostracized by everyone, just because she was green. I must add that her singing was strong and full of emotions, leading to the loudest applause! Even Stacci turned to me halfway through to ask me, "the witch is not a bad person right?"

Basically the only photo I was allowed to take.
The sets, as well as the costumes were spectacular to say the least and was easily the best theatrical production I had watched so far! Clever use of props and lighting made defying gravity almost believable, and all you need is to just immense yourself in the experience! I was kind of worried of my raised expectations after hearing the great reviews from friends who had watched it before, but it turned out that the musical was really as great as it was made out to be! I am so glad I need not fly over to London to catch the original production now that it is in Singapore.

I do not know if it was really the slang or the sound system, but even I had a little problem making out the lyrics or the conversations between the characters at times. Luckily I read the storyline here before going for the show and thus was still able to catch what was going on and explain to the little ones when asked. You may wish to do that too if you intend to catch it, which you really should anyway! There were also much to be learnt for the kiddos from the story of the unlikely friendship between the two witches, and especially that in life, nothing is really black and white.

Awesome turn out of many celebrities at the gala premiere, that only a great musical will attract I guess!
Thank you BASE Entertainment for bringing the musical over to our shores and giving the kiddos the opportunity to catch this wonderful production! For the rest of you who are hesitating, it is not everyday that one gets to catch a Broadway production locally, without the need to pay for airfares. That alone, would have been a good enough reason for you to book your tickets, like now.

Tip: For those with young kids, try to get stall row AA which is the first elevated row after the front portions. It will give them a great view of the entire stage, minus the heads of the other patrons in front.
